I don’t know if the data truly supports the assumption but one snippet that caught my eye was Real Madrid president and ESL chairman Florentino Perez, saying that ESL was set up “to save football” because young people are “no longer interested” in the game because of “a lot of poor quality games.

While the ESL clearly wasn’t the ‘right’ solution, I wonder to what extent demographics might bring change to the beautiful game regardless?

We hear that cycling is growing as a leisure activity at the expense of the golfing demographic (hence the MAMIL stereotype), and a very nice bike can equate to a season ticket – perhaps less if you follow top flight soccer. There’s also stats kicking around about the size and speed by which E-sports are growing. And anecdotally I seem to have seen more teenagers shooting hoops that scoring goals during lockdown…
Regards,

Jason
